Foundry Operative (Fettler)

Northfield Foundry Ltd is a well-established Iron foundry based in Brixham Devon. Northfield have been manufacturing Iron casting up to 1600kgs from its current site since 1948, it’s origins however can be traced back to before the war. Our flexible production methods enable us to produce a wide range of castings from pumps to compressors and clutch housings to filter casings but specialising in manufacturing rotary valves and diverters for the powder and bulk handling industries.

Our stable financial base and continued investment in our facilities enable us to offer long term supply continuity and keep us at the top of our industry offering excellent customer service and quality castings in a timely manner. We have the facilities and knowledge to meet the high level technical requirements and service demanded by customers. Northfield is well placed to supply UK and European companies with highly cored, repeat batch Grey iron castings.

Our experience ensures that the customer’s products are delivered with the safe knowledge and understanding that the castings are manufactured to the specification and standards required when the product is designed and purchased.

We are able to offer complete project management including casting, fabrication, machining, non-destructive testing, pressure testing, and special painting. This allows the customer to place one order for the complete manufacture of the required component, from conceptual design to finished part ready for installation.

Our current production facilities have the capacity to produce 1200 tonnes per year.

We are currently looking for a Fettler who has experience of using a variety of grinding equipment.  Candidates should have knowledge of working in a foundry environment together with heavy engineering experience.

The main duties of the role are:

  • To strip sand from castings using manual and mechanical equipment
  • To grind casting to the specified standard
  • To remove defects from castings using grinding equipment
  • To rectify welding work on castings using grinding tools
  • To dress castings to dimensions using grinding equipment
  • General housing keeping duties in line with this role
  • To work to quality procedures
  • To ensure all duties are carried out according to quality and health and safety procedures

Candidates must be physically fit as the role is physically demanding and involves heavy lifting.

You must be flexible, adaptable, and reliable, and be able to work on your own and as a part of a team.    Good organisational and communication skills are required along with a positive attitude, enthusiasm and a can-do approach to tasks.

Foundry Moulder

We are currently looking for an experienced/semi-skilled moulder.  Previous experience would be beneficial but training can be provided if necessary.

The main duties of this role are:

  • To assist with the smooth, efficient running of the foundry moulding operations
  • Ramming and stripping furane sand moulds
  • Preparing moulds for casting
  • Venting and coring up moulds
  • Defect analysis to spot mould defects and adapt accordingly
  • Using overhead and swing cranes ranging from 500 kg to 5 ton
  • General housing keeping duties in line with this role
  • To work to quality procedures
  • To ensure all duties are carried out according to quality and health and safety procedures

We are looking for a Foundry Maintenance Engineer who will be responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all foundry equipment and facilities. This role ensures the continuous and efficient operation of machinery and systems, minimising downtime and maximising productivity. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical and electrical systems, as well as experience in a foundry or similar industrial environment.

Candidates will need to have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field (relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree).  You will also need to have demonstrable maintenance experience  in a foundry or similar industrial environment.

Our ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems.  Experience of working with PLCs, automation systems and industrial control systems would be an advantage.

The main duties of the role are:

  •  Perform routine maintenance and inspections on foundry equipment, including furnaces, Molds, casting machines, and other related machinery.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to extend equipment lifespan and reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Collaborate with production and engineering teams to ensure machinery and equipment are operating at peak efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, inspections, and repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and promote a safe working environment.
  • Assist in the installation and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Manage inventory of spare parts and maintenance supplies.
  • Provide technical support and training to other maintenance staff and operators.
  • Continuously seek opportunities to improve maintenance processes and reduce costs.

Candidates must be physically fit and have the ability to lift and move parts and equipment.

Strong organisational, time management and communication skills are required along with a positive attitude, enthusiasm and a can-do approach to tasks.  You will need excellent problem-solving skills, be resilient and have the ability to work under pressure.
